Combating Malnourishment
In La Argentina, nutritious food is scarce. We work to provide daily meals for schoolchildren and support local farms to ensure sustainable access to nutrition.
Malnourishment and related health issues such as diabetes are very prominent in La Argentina as families’ diets are overly reliant on carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice, and yuca. With most families, even these essential carbohydrates are considered a luxury. Many children rely on the school to provide their only meals, but the school often struggles to meet this need. MOCA Colombia works with local farms to create a sustainable solution by supplying students with meals and investing in the local communities, ensuring a sustainable, nutritious food supply.

Our Commitment
Malnutrition remains a significant concern in Colombia, particularly among children under five. As of 2024, 9.6% of children under five are affected by stunting (chronic undernutrition), and 1.0% suffer from wasting (acute undernutrition). In the first half of 2024, 123 children under five died due to malnutrition, with indigenous communities being disproportionately affected.
Food insecurity exacerbates this crisis. Approximately 13 million Colombians are food insecure, with 3% facing severe food insecurity. Rural areas and marginalized populations, including indigenous communities, are particularly vulnerable.
At MOCA Colombia, we recognize the urgency of addressing these challenges, particularly in underserved communities like La Argentina. Our nutrition initiatives focus on:
- Providing Daily Nutritious Meals: Ensuring that children receive balanced diets essential for their growth and development.
- Supporting Local Agriculture: Collaborating with local farmers to boost sustainable food production, thereby enhancing community food security.
- Educational Programs: Implementing workshops on nutrition and health to empower families with knowledge for better dietary choices.
